Stem Cell Therapy

What are stem cells and how can they make a difference to your health?

Stem cells are in all of us and are nature's messenger cells, undifferentiated ‘progenitor’ cells, meaning they can become more than one type of cell in the body. The cells we use at our Portland clinc are mesenchymal (mess-en-keymal) ‘adult’ stem cells derived from donated newborn umbilical cord blood (they are not embryonic cells), and are designed in the body to become bone, cartilage, connective tissue, fat and muscle. Learn more about umbilical cord stem cells and the lab where we source our Liveyon stem cells.

As we age so do our stem cells and they drastically decline in number causing the body to lose the fight against degeneration. Mesenchymal stem cells from umbilical cords are plentiful, young and healthy; millions of cells provide a more potent source than your own fat or bone marrow derived cells and your body will not recognize these umbilical cord cells as foreign. Human Umbilical Cord blood Tissue samples also contain a rich mix of other regenerative cells, growth factors and proteins that aid the healing and regrowth process.

Often your body’s own inflammatory response prevents the healing process in a vicious cycle of immune defenses. When Stem cells are injected into your body they home in on areas of inflammation, cell death and injury, signaling the body to repair and regrow damaged tissue using your own stem cells. Stem cells have an anti-inflammatory effect and an immune-modulatory response. Everyone’s body responds in its unique way but results can be truly miraculous.

Dr White injects stem cells into the area of injury in a minimally-invasive in-office procedure. There is no painful harvesting of your own cells with liposuction or big needles and there is very little down time. The procedure is very safe; the lab we use to source cells specially screens, filters and treats the cells to prevent adverse reactions.

Can I continue with my current treatment program while I get stem cells?

Absolutely! We believe in the integration of care and the power of complementary medicine. Because certain medications may interact in the short term and prevent the stem cells from working optimally Dr White may advise a temporary change but generally you should continue on your current course of treatment, physical therapy and rehab and can quickly return to normal activities.

How soon will I see results?

Short answer; it depends on the patient. Unlike a steroidal injection, you will most likely not feel immediate pain relief after your stem cell therapy. Typically you can start to see results as early as 2 weeks and the healing process will continue over months with optimal improvement at 6-9 months.

Is this procedure safe? What are the risks? Is stem cell therapy FDA approved?

No procedure is completely without risks. The injection procedure to transfer cells is minimally invasive and therefore very safe. We use careful aseptic techniques to minimize the risk of infections. Stem cell therapy is too new to be approved by the FDA. The lab where we source our samples is certified by the FDA and the American Association of Tissue Banks and follows cGMP (certified safe) handling procedures. The samples are extensively screened, tested for safety and come with a guaranteed number of live, healthy stem cells. Learn more here

What guarantee will I have that I will be satisfied with my results?

In medicine because bodies are unique there is no guarantee of results. We are happy to report that our overall patient satisfaction rate is very high. Our growth depends almost entirely on word-of-mouth referrals from satisfied patients. We help more people than we don’t help, but we don’t help everyone. We have found that the severity of the condition, the overall health of the recipient and their follow up self-care plan all play a part in predicting success.

Will I see a change in my X-Ray or MRI results?

We apologize in advance to you engineer minded folks as the answer is muddy. While the goal of stem cell therapy is to treat your pain, improve and increase your activities of daily living and quality of life, it most likely will not lead to hugely noticeable improvements in your X-ray or MRI…we’re OK with that and believe given your improvement you will be too. To us, success is being able to normally walk up a flight of stairs, keep up with your grandkids, or go hiking, running or skiing etc. Although we use X-rays to for treatment planning and monitoring and infrared imaging to view changes in inflammation, we don’t put heavy emphasis on the before and after diagnostic images.

Is Stem Cell therapy covered by insurance? How much does Stem Cell therapy cost

At this time stem cell therapy is considered investigational and insurance companies do not cover the cost. We accept major credit cards and we have no/low cost financing options that we can discuss with you at your initial consultation.

At Comprehensive Pain we strive to keep our overhead costs contained and want to help as many people as possible. We source cells with a very high viability. We believe one size does not fit all and will strive to match the right size of cell transfer to your specific needs, keeping cost as low as possible. Typically treatment starts at $2500 for a small joint. *Contact us* [*link to contact capture] to set up a free consultation to learn more about pricing

How do you know you are injecting in the right place?

Dr White and Dr Clark use imaging for 100% of the diagnostics and procedures we perform using stem cells; ultrasound is the standard for imaging soft tissues (i.e. hip, knee, rotator cuff, Achilles, plantar fascia, etc) in real time to ensure we inject the stem cells with precision and accuracy and Dr Clark has received advanced training in the use of the *infrared diagnostics* [*link to Thermal Imaging page under 'Services] and imaging to pinpoint care and measure outcomes.
